What colours to expect from dyes

Here is a super basic list of dyes that i have tried and trust! These can be foraged, grown, or purchased online here in the UK. Note that some of these dyes are Ph sensitive and the colours can be shifted by adding acid or alkali substances such a vinegar and baking soda. I will be writing another post in the near future with added images so you can see depths of colour achieved.


Alder cones - browns

Alkanet - purples and browns

Annato - oranges

Avocado pits – pinks and browns

Black beans – purples and blues

Blackthorn – purples and blues

Bracken – beiges

Brown onion skin – oranges and browns and yellows

Chlorophyllin - green

Coffee – browns and beiges

Coreopsis – reds, yellows and oranges

Dahlias (red) – deep red

Dock - green

Dyers chamomile - yellow

Elderberries – purples and blues and pinks

Hawthorne - peach

Heather – yellows and greens

Indigo – blues

Lady’s mantle – greens, yellows and browns

Lichen – golden yellows

Logwood – purples, blues and blacks

Madder – pinks and reds

Marigold - yellow

Mustard – yellow

Nettles – khaki

Pomegranate skins - yellow

Red onion skin - khaki

Sandalwood – pink and beige

Silver birch - pinks

St johns wort – greens and yellows

Tea – browns, neutrals

Turmeric – yellow

Weld - yellow

Willow - pink

Wine – purple

Woad – blue
